How We Operate
Each week, the shelter is located at a different faith community in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area. Faith Communities partner together to host Open Doors guests in buildings large enough to host the shelter. (There are a total of 14 shelter locations, but over 30 faith communities who participate in hosting the shelter.)
Volunteers provide countless volunteer hours, meals, snacks and more to the Open Doors program. More importantly, volunteers offer a sense of community, fellowship and connection to those in our community who are often forgotten, ignored and overlooked.
The Open Doors Shelter is open for 22 weeks a year- beginning with the first Monday of November. We are open from 6:30pm to 7:00am daily and have 40 beds available for men and women over the age of 18.
Our program could not operate without the help and support of our community- individuals, businesses, civic organizations and faith communities.
