How We Operate

Before COVID-19, each week, the shelter was located at a different faith community in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area. Faith Communities partnered together to host Open Doors guests in buildings large enough to host the shelter. (There were a total of 14 shelter locations, but over 30 faith communities who participate in hosting the shelter.)

Now amidst the pandemic, we have moved to the former Red Front Supermarket building at 677 Chicago Avenue Harrisonburg. We are working to implement the shelter in the safest possible way by not rotating locations each week. Instead we will be asking volunteer groups to serve dinner at our central shelter location.

Volunteers provide countless volunteer hours, meals, snacks and more to the Open Doors program. More importantly, volunteers offer a sense of community, fellowship and connection to those in our community who are often forgotten, ignored and overlooked.

The Open Doors Shelter is open daily and has beds available for men and women over the age of 18.

Our program could not operate without the help and support of our community- individuals, businesses, civic organizations and faith communities.
